Film History Part1: Galileo Sunspot Drawings
In 1612 Galileo made a series or sunspot drawings that have become (I believe) the first known 3D animation. With this information Galileo helped develop his hypothesis that the sun was a globe (not a disk) and that the planets revolved around it, not around the earth. Thus drawing the ire of the church. Upon showing him the instruments of torture, Galileo agreed to stop publishing his theory. The Galileo Susnpot Drawings

I always thought that the drawings were very interesting. I also thought that it was a shame that Galileo didn't develope the idea of the flip-book further. They could have had a whole new form of entertainment back in the 16th century. Too bad it took another 200 or so years to be rediscovered.
