Devils Day 20

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Laundry, mowing, few visits. Kayakers from campsite in A.M 2 boats from Methodist camp, but only 4 came ashore. Strong winds from west all day. After 5:30 we were getting ready to kayak sea caves when 7 campers showed up from South landing. We toured them and while they picnicked and frizbeed in back yard. We did our sea cave visit. As soon as we got out there a thunderstorm was blowing in. A sailboat was high-tailing it and pointed out storm clouds. Lightning was hitting about 15-20 miles north and NW. We came in and changed out of wetsuits and walked to west landing to watch. We got only a little damp. Probably less than 0.1 inch rain. Around 8:00 listened to rescue operation: 33 people were kayaking to see caves presumably a girl scout group. Some apparently tipped and 3 were rescued by power boaters in the area. 11 people managed to get to “Lunch beach” on Menard Road while the rest eventually arrived back t Meyer’s beach. Took at least an hour to determine that all were accounted for. Now, at 10:40pm, 305 is trying to locate the beached 11, followed by Bayfield ambulance, sheriff’s deputy, 4 1st responders and Red Cliff police. They apparently are in a ravine near the caves. It was a great relief to hear all are accounted for. Perhaps an update in tomorrow’s log.
