Devils Day 16

Saturday, July 23rd 2005

Picked Blueberries. Seas less than 1’ but very gray skies so not too many visitors. At 5 pm we started walking west shore to the south. Devils Island walk-in caveWe discovered we only needed to bushwhack about 10% of the distance. When we were just south of a point even with the midpoint on the N_S Trail, we cut inland among huge old growth white pines. Very easy walk due to huge trees and not thick undergrowth. It was very busy at S. landing. There were 3 boats overnighting at the dock. One of them had a permit for the campsite. A second kayak-camper didn’t know what day it was and showed up a day early. A third kayaker had a permit for a site on Rocky but felt the waves were a bit beyond his expertise. I had told him to ask the guy with the permit if it was OK to camp, not knowing that the guy had come on the wrong day and already pitched his tent. It created a rather amusing triangle as the 3rd kayaker asked the second one when they both needed to talk to the first one. Devils Island Tree Roots at SunsetThey finally got it ironed out and the sailboater (with the permit) held court on the finer points of Kentucky bourbon (with samples, of course) and a good time was had by all. We returned back too late to see the sunset. Remiss in our duties, I always tell visitors that one of the duties of lighthouse keepers is to go out every evening and make sure the sun sets.
