Devils Day 7

Devils Island Gear in WoodsThursday July 14th, 2005

An impromptu visit from maintenance with another can of gas.  So, I thought I should mow.  I panicked when the blade hit a hidden pipe and turned sharply, jack-knifing the front end and busted a snap-ring on the front right axle.  Used a piece of brass rod to fashion a temporary snap-ring and limped slowly back to the garage.  Wind and waves kicked up throughout the day so no visitors.  Did laundry, flew kite, swept tower and explored woods.  I have been looking for theDevils Island Tractor in Woods bulldozer on the west landing trails and came upon it accidentally.  It is ingeniously hidden across from a fork in the trail where your eye is drawn to your choice of trails.  Amazing trails and secret passages on this island.  Watched the sun and VenusDevils Island Lighthouse Lens at Sunset 4 set from the tower.  Jupiter also visible.  Now a ½ moon so star gazing is poor for this week.

Note: The bulldozer is an interesting combination of cultural and natural history.  It is blamed for the existence on the island of a rare grass, the "heath rush" that grows in this hemisphere only in Greenland and on Devil's Island.  The Coast Guard reportedly acquired the bulldozer from the US Army who used it in Greenland.
